The main purpose of the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan is to build a modern bridge to span the past, the present, and the future, erected on the strong foundations of the fundamental values of life. The Bhavan believes that there are elements in all cultures, which transcend all barriers and knit people together. Its ideal is "Vasudhiva kutum bakam," which means, 'The world is one family'.

The school motto is "Aa no bhadraah kratavo yantu viswatah", which means 'Let noble thoughts come to us from every side.' The Bhavan firmly believes that people, who are either petrified by worn-out customs or caper at the call of every passing fancy, cannot build a radiant and stable future. Revitalising ancient values and reintegrating them to suit the changing needs of the modern times alone will give people the strength to assimilate whatever is good in the new world, without being swept off their feet. The 'Bhavan's Faith' also clearly reinstates its mission goals.

Bhavan's Delhi Kendra began its life in 1952 when Dr Rajendra Prasad laid its foundation stone. Jawaharlal Nehru formally inaugurated the Kendra in 1957. The main building came up out of the generous donation made by Girdharilal Mehta. New wings were added in 1976 and 1982.
