PREPARING FOR THE TRIP

Submitted by Richard Lango on Oct. 18, 2007.

After one has been accepted to study abroad, there are a number of vital preparations that he needs to make so as to avoid some rude shocks. Many people often just focus on the new country, yet preparations start right at home. Since he had a life there, he should ensure that all necessary issues are taken care of so as not to distract his attention once he has settled for studies. Let him check whether he has any dealings that require the power of attorney. Of course we are assuming that he has already taken care of his student visa.

He should attend relevant expos to learn as much as possible about the institution he is to attend and the country in general. He should also try to get into contact with those already at the institution, not to mention relatives in the country.

Since he is going to meet different people, he must learn about the culture shock that he will encounter. He should learn as much as possible about the people he is going to live with. Even the simple use of a word can mean something completely different. Clothes will also matter not just culturally but also climate-wise.

He will likewise need to know well in advance his accommodation status. Let him apply for university accommodation if that option is available. If it is not available or he is not given a chance, he should start finding possible rental places, taking into account how he will commute. He should try to get and sign an accommodation contract. He should as well find out about the health insurance options available to him. Furthermore, let him find out and secure more ways of financing his trip before the day arrives. Some institutions offer grants or soft loans in this regard.

Such preparations will not only make the time he waits for his departure quite exciting but also useful.

I would suggest that you don't prepare for your trip and take it as it comes....
