The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India (formerly Regional Engineering College, Durgapur), was established under an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace-setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. It is a fully funded premier Technological Institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. In 2010, NIT-Durgapur is going to celebrate its Golden Jubilee Year (completing 50 years), NIT-Durgapur is one of the oldest of 14-RECs established between 1959 and 1965.

The Cabinet, at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, also approved a proposal to introduce the National Institutes of Technology(NIT) Bill 2006 in parliament to bring 19 such institutions within the ambit of the act.This will enable the National Institutes of Technology to become centres of excellence like IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and help fulfil the need of the country for quality manpower in the field of engineering, science and technology.
