New Horizon English High School

New Horizon Alternative High School is in its seventh year of existence. Within the first six years, 72 students have graduated who otherwise would not have made it in a traditional program. Students must be at risk of not graduating from a traditional high school to qualify for enrollment in New Horizon. They must also go through an interview process. During the interview, they and their parents sign a contract agreeing to follow the rules and expectations of the school. Starting with the 2002-2003 school year, students will be required to wear a school uniform. This will consist of a polo shirt, in the school's color of forest green. The shirt will be accompanied by navy blue or black slacks or navy blue or black skirt. At New Horizon, discipline and attendance are more strict than the traditional school with a closed campus policy. The school year consists of four nine week sessions during which time students can earn 13 credits toward graduation requirements. The school day starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. There are three two hour classes with a half hour lunch period. Enrollment in classes is limited to 15 students, so teachers can provide more one-on-one instruction and assistance. Teachers are encouraged to utilize a more hands-on approach to teaching. On Wednesdays, students attend a 45 minute advisory class geared toward job readiness and career exploration. They spend the rest of the morning engaged in self-chosen service projects throughout the community. They receive one credit after successful completion of four, nine week sessions for this 'Real World Experience' class.
