Maitreyi College was established by the Delhi Administration in July 1967. It is a constituent College of the University of Delhi. The College made its modest beginning in a school building in Netaji Nagar. However, it has since made rapid progress both in size and stature. Maitreyi started with a small staff of 10 teachers offering only B.A (Pass) and B.Sc. (General) courses. The college bears the name of Maitreyi, an eminent sage and scholar of ancient India who was the epitome of the perfect balance between intellectual pursuits and womanly duties. Maitreyi, the wife of Yajnavalkya, considered knowledge to be the only means of attaining immortality and urged her husband to share his knowledge, rather than his material possessions with her. Likewise, it has been the objective of the college to produce balanced young ladies. The institution believes in bi-directional enrichment, and emphasises not only on imparting knowledge but also on cultivation of personality. The college has established a tradition of continuous achievements in the field of sports, NCC, NSS and other cultural activities.
